We invite historical interpreters, farmers, scholars, craftspeople, curators, educators, administrators and everyone interested in Living History to Boston, Massachusetts for ALHFAM’s annual conference and 50^th  anniversary celebration, June 21-25.

Fellowships are available that will cover basic registration plus $300. For more information, and to apply, follow this link. Fellowship applications are now due by March 9.

The Skills Training and Preservation Committee (STP) is requesting information from ALHFAM members about skills workshops open to ALHFAM members, living history professionals, and/or the general public that they would like listed on the ALHFAM website. 

Workshops can be on any subject relating to historic trades and skills, professional museum skills, living history interpretation skills, as well as similar hands-on learning opportunities. The workshops may be part of a larger local, regional, national or international conference. 

The subject matter must be of interest to ALHFAM members and the organization or individual hosting the workshop must be an individual, institutional or business member of ALHFAM.  Workshops that do not meet these criteria will not be posted, and ALHFAM reserves the right to decline to post information.

The Mid-Atlantic ALHFAM Conference and Regional Meeting will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2020.

Co-Hosts: Middlesex County Office of Arts & History, Division of Historic Sites and History Services and ALHFAM

Locations: East Jersey Old Town Village, Piscataway, NJ

Workshops in Development: This one-day event will have a mixture of traditional sessions, presentations with hands-on components, and immersive workshops. Proposed topics include an Intro to Beekeeping, Reenactor to First Person Interpreter, 19^th Century Baseball, Letterpress Printing, and much more.

Due to the generosity of Middlesex County and East Jersey Old Town Village, this will be a free event, though registration for specific workshops and sessions will be required due to spacial limitations, so keep an eye on the ALHFAM website for the program of events and registration! Don’t miss it!

As part of the Skills, Training, and Preservation initiative, ALHFAM and Tillers International are pleased to offer a two-day, intensive Plowing Workshop for ALHFAM members. The workshop will take place September 7-8 at Tillers International in Scotts, Michigan. Learn more here. 

The Living History Anthology brings together twenty-six practical essays on the craft of establishing and running living history museums. Contributions cover all aspects of developing and running a living history site.

Including contributions on strategic planning, human resource management, research programs, collection policies, and engagement with varied audiences, including indigenous groups, the book demonstrates how to approach such tasks from a living history perspective. Topics unique to the sector, such as re-enactment, historic trade crafts, and working with machinery and livestock, are also covered. Each essay is briefly introduced and contextualized by the editors, while the collection is bookended by a new foreword and afterword from Debra A. Reid, and an introduction from the editors.

Representing the collective wisdom of the Association for Living History, Farm and Agricultural Museums (ALHFAM) members across the decades, The Living History Anthology provides a valuable resource for all living history practitioners.
