    Job Description

    Based on our internal equity review process, the starting salary for this position will be $27.36

    The current full hourly range for this position is $27.36 - $37.46 


    This position provides the opportunity to work with one of the most recognized living history museums on the West Coast! This position is responsible for ensuring the museum store is a continuation of the educational and curatorial mission of Fort Nisqually Living History Museum. The work environment is primarily within the Visitor Center, but may occasionally be outside during special events. The position is part of an amazing staff that engages our audience in a way that makes memories and provides the opportunity to connect with guests with tangible reminders of their memories through souvenir and gift sales and translates museum users to stewards of our cultural resources through museum membership sales.

    Position Information     
    Under the direction of assigned supervisor, provide administrative service, and coordinate all aspects of the retail program at Fort Nisqually Living History Museum.
     
    In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to:
    • Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.
    • Interact professionally with other employees, customers, and suppliers.
    • Work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments.
    • Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
    • Observe applicable safety requirements, use safety equipment provided, always implement appropriate safety practices and report immediately any unsafe working conditions or hazards.

    Essential Duties

    • Coordinate the purchasing and inventory of merchandise, equipment, and related operational supplies including ordering procedures, receiving procedures, inputting into point of sale, pricing procedures, display, and sales.
    • Communicate with vendors and suppliers, obtain quotes and view product lines; attend a variety of local gift shows to acquire optimal merchandise within budget.
    • Collaborate on the development of custom products that reflect the Museum’s brand identity, further the visitor experience, and contribute to elevating the Museum’s visibility.
    • Assist  with day-to-day operations of Fort Nisqually’s daily museum store operations, including admissions, gift shop, program booking, and other areas as assigned.
    • Prepare and maintain various financial and attendance records, reports and statistical data associated with daily operations.  Monitor and interpret financial information collected.
    • Provide and monitor change fund activities, including providing change for all cash points, inventory and ordering of change.
    • Develop a merchandising plan which supports the museum business plan as developed by the museum supervisor. Prepare promotional displays and rotate merchandise as determined by merchandising plan.
    • Create schedules for part-time customer service/cashier staff. 
    • Provide training and technical assistance to customer service staff. 
    • Assist supervisor with hiring part-time customer service staff.  
    • Greet and assist customers with registration and general reception services, disseminate policy and regulation information and marketing materials; resolve customer issues as appropriate. 
    • Operate a telephone switchboard, directing calls to appropriate personnel. Provide general information assistance and direction to callers and visitors concerning park functions, events, facilities, and programs. 
    • Collect and count money. Prepare and reconcile tills and provide cash handling oversight.  Prepare and travel to financial institution to deliver bank deposits in accordance with established procedures.  
    • Perform daily operational duties including, but not limited to, opening, and closing of facility, operating a cash register, and other standard office equipment.
    • Provide support to program staff as requested by supervisor. 
    • Occasionally travel to other park district facilities to pick up orders or mail, as well as specified training. 

    Minimum Qualifications

    Two years of college course work in retail, business, or related field and at least one year of retail and/or inventory management experience.  Two additional years of retail and/or inventory management experience may substitute for the education requirement.

    Must have a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

    Must be able to work a variety of schedules including weekends and holidays.

    • Retail sales and merchandising best practices.

    • Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
    • Operation of personal computer and associated specialized software.

     ABILITY TO:
    • Work mornings, evenings, and/or weekends on regular basis.
    • Perform a variety of responsible clerical duties.
    • Operate office equipment and machines such as calculators, copiers, computer, word processing and transcription equipment, postage machine, fax machine.
    • Operate a telephone switchboard, directing calls to appropriate personnel, departments and offices; receive and transmit messages; provide general information and assistance to callers; problem-solve customer needs for proper routing.
    • Greet visitors of the facility in a courteous and helpful manner; provide information, directions and assistance concerning Park District events, facilities and activities.
    • Receive, sort, meter and process US and internal Park District mail; learn regular, express and bulk mail postage rates and procedures.
    • Maintain routine records and logs.
    • Perform simple and repetitive tasks.
    • Interpret and apply rules and regulations.
    • Perform emergency first aid and CPR as needed and according to established guidelines.
    • Communicate clearly verbally and in writing.
    • Assess and evaluate situations effectively.
    • Exert optimal effort in successfully completing tasks.
    • Take initiative with minimal supervision.
    • Extract and record data and carry out calculations accurately.
    • Set up and operate equipment that can require selection from options or different settings.
    • Manage time efficiently and effectively through scheduling and prioritizing.
    • Work within and contribute to the effectiveness of a team, respecting differences.
