    Job Details

    Principal Function: The Livestock and Agriculture Specialist – Interpretation Coordinator is responsible for the care and handling of Conner Prairie’s livestock as well as daily interpretation within Conner Prairie’s agriculture-related experience areas.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to:

    1.    Perform daily basic livestock care, light veterinary work, and routine maintenance with Conner Prairie’s livestock in accordance with low-stress handling methods and Conner Prairie’s animal care standards.   
    2.    Engage in daily interpretation and program implementation for the public in Conner Prairie’s modern and historic agriculture-based experience areas.  
    3.     Coordinate with and train part-time interpretation staff and volunteers to ensure the highest standards of interpretation are met.  
    4.     Assist with the creation, development, and execution of agriculture-related public programming, events, and classes.
    5.     Conduct research on modern and historic agriculture topics
    6.     Assist with routine maintenance, cleaning, and upkeep of barns, tools, and equipment
    7.   Safely operate machinery including, but not limited to, tractors, ATVs, truck and trailer, etc.
    8.   Perform other duties as assigned to support Agriculture and Facilities operations

    Supervisory Responsibilities:  May supervise the day-to-day activity of departmental part-time and seasonal staff.

    Education and/or Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture Management, Animal Science, Animal Biology or Animal Behavior or similar relevant experience. Experience working with rare breeds desired.  Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in related program development and implementation preferred.

    Work Environment:  The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is exposed to working in wet or humid conditions (non-weather), and outdoor weather conditions. The employee will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, near fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather), risk of electrical shock, and work with explosives. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    Hours for this position are generally 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  Shift times and days will vary depending on departmental needs throughout the year.  Some holidays, weekends, and evenings will be required.
