The interpretation coordinator works in the Museum Programs and Marketing unit of Mackinac State Historic Parks (MSHP), reporting to the deputy director. This position oversees interpretive programs at Fort Mackinac and the Historic Downtown Buildings, conducting research to ensure the authenticity and integrity of the programs. This position recruits, hires, trains and supervises Mackinac Island seasonal interpretation staff and interns. This position coordinates visitor evaluation, serves on MSHP project teams, researches and develops new exhibits and programs, and develops and manages special events. This position has general oversight of Mackinac State Historic Parks educational programs and serves as liaison between MSHP and educators.
Mackinac State Historic Parks is managed by the Mackinac Island State Park Commission (MISPC), an agency of the State of Michigan. This position is based in Mackinaw City. This is not a Civil Service position; it is an annually renewable 12 – month contractual position. This position includes benefits as stated in the MISPC Economic Benefits Guide for revenue bond employees. This position reports to the deputy director.
SALARY RANGE FOR THIS POSITION: $20.87 to $28.16

RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION):
Program Research and Exhibit Development
1. Serve on MSHP committees, teams and task forces and other duties as assigned.
Prefer a master’s degree in Museum Studies, History or American Studies
A bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field with substantial additional interpretation/education experience in a museum may be considered.
§ Minimum two years of experience working as an interpretation supervisor, museum educator or interpreter.
§ Minimum of one year of supervision of not less than five seasonal full-time staff and/or FT volunteers.
§ Experience in historic site interpretation.
§ Knowledge and understanding of the philosophy, processes and techniques of historic site interpretation. Experience in research and writing. Knowledge of Great Lakes regional history.
§ Knowledge and experience in live interpretation techniques.
§ Knowledge of visitor service standards and practices in a large park or museum.

§ Ability to schedule, conduct, and keep records.
