    Section/Unit Description

Fort Dobbs preserves the location of North Carolina's only inland French and Indian War fortification. It's location on the frontier of North Carolina during this international conflict served as a protector for the European settlers in the region and was staffed periodically during the conflict by British provincial soldiers.

Built in 1756, its interpretation includes the story of North Carolina's provincial military in the French and Indian War, the settlement of the western colonial frontier, and the history of the Cherokee and Catawba during the settlement period. The site welcomes approximately 19,000 visitors and conducts nearly 1,000

guided tours per year through the reconstructed fort. The site also administers Shallow Ford State Historic Site, a recreation area in Lewisville currently under development with a projected opening in 2026.

    Division Description

The Division of State Historic Sites was established to coordinate administration of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources’ State Historic Sites Program, which includes 27 historic sites across North Carolina and Division

offices located in Raleigh. We connect people to North Carolina’s history, sharing the power of place to inspire a common future through preservation, education, and transformative engagement.
