    Manager of Volunteers and Interns 

    Location: Old Sturbridge Village, Sturbridge, Massachusetts

    Job Type: Full-time 

    Pay: From $50,000 per year 

    Work Location: In person 

    Schedule: Wednesday-Sunday  

    Position Summary 

    Old Sturbridge Village (OSV), the largest outdoor living history museum in New England, seeks a dynamic and collaborative professional to lead, manage, and expand its Volunteer and Internship Programs. This full-time role combines the responsibilities of managing over 100 volunteers and 45+ interns annually, including high school, college, and post-graduate participants. The ideal candidate will be passionate about education, community engagement, and fostering inclusive learning environments. 
     
    This position plays a key role in supporting OSV’s mission and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA), and will work closely with multiple departments to ensure meaningful, educational, and impactful experiences for all program participants. 

    Key Responsibilities 

    Program Leadership & Development 

    • Lead the recruitment, training, and supervision of volunteers, junior interns, and college/post-grad interns. 

    • Expand internship and volunteer opportunities across departments and seasons (summer, semester, year-round). 

    • Collaborate with Human Resources and department heads to design and implement training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. 

    • Promote DEIA by diversifying recruitment pipelines and fostering inclusive program environments. 

    Community Engagement & Outreach 

    • Build and maintain partnerships with local high schools, colleges, universities, and community organizations. 

    • Represent OSV at career fairs, academic institutions, and community events. 

    • Serve as an ambassador for OSV’s educational mission and public programs. 

    Cross-Institutional Collaboration 

    • Strategize with other departments to identify opportunities and needs for volunteers and interns. 

    • Work with other departments to ensure alignment with program vision. 

    Program Operations & Support 

    • Coordinate program logistics including scheduling, housing, transportation, and field trips. 

    • Support the Resident Assistantfor College Interns and manage interpersonal conflicts in collaboration with HR. 

    • Communicate regularly with volunteers, interns, and families to ensure clarity and engagement. 

     

    Evaluation & Impact 

    • Develop and implement systems for tracking participation, performance, and feedback.  

    • Provide career-planning support and evaluations for interns. 

    • Assess and improve program effectiveness through data and participant feedback. 

    • Foster a community of program alumni. 

    Qualifications 

    • Bachelor’s Degree in History, Museum Studies, Education, or a related field. 

    • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a museum, educational, or nonprofit setting. 

    • Proven ability to recruit, train, and manage diverse groups. 

    • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. 

    • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays. 

    • Valid Driver’s License required. 

    • Commitment to DEIA principles and inclusive program design.
