    Hunter’s Home is the only remaining pre–Civil War plantation home in Oklahoma. The site is transitioning into a living history farm to give visitors a window into life on a antebellum Cherokee plantation. The site has a living history season from Labor Day through Memorial Day, featuring living history interpreters demonstrating nineteenth-century trades, chores, cooking, gardening, and crafts

    The home is a National Historic Landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and part of the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. The home was built in 1845 for George and Minerva Ross. Minerva was the oldest daughter of Lewis and Fannie (Holt) Ross, members of a wealthy and influential Cherokee family. Lewis was a merchant, planter, and national treasurer of the Cherokee Nation. His brother, John, was principal chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1828 until his death in 1866.

    When the Cherokees were forced to leave their homes in the eastern United States during the Trail of Tears 1838–39, Murrell chose to move with his wife’s family to the new Nation in the West. In Park Hill, Indian Territory, he established a plantation and skilled artisans among the enslaved built a large, frame home. Staff is actively researching the lives of those enslaved on the plantation to recover and share their stories. 

    Key Duties:

    Work with site director to develop programs that contribute to the historic site’s interpretive plan.

    Research funding opportunities and prepare funding requests for educational programming.

    Oversee interpretive programming including supervision of site interpretive personnel and volunteers

    Work with Cherokee Nation to develop programming for Cherokee Nation tours

    Must be willing to dress in appropriate 19th-century clothing for tours and programming.  Perform 19th-century household chores such as caring for livestock, gardening, assisting with field crops, etc.

    Oversee the social media accounts for the site

    Stock gift shop and maintain inventory, collect admission fees and gift shop sales

    Schedule tours and promote the site at various area events

    Assist with collections cataloging and care

    Assist with cleaning and maintenance of the historic site and facilities

    Weekend work required

    Necessary skills include establishing and maintaining effective working relations, communicating effectively both orally and in writing; analyzing complex historical information and presenting the key concepts to visitors in an engaging way. Must be proficient with technology including use of computers, virtual programming formats and social media. Must be able to handle retail operations including counting cash, operating a cash register, handling credit card transactions, maintaining inventory, and reconciling revenue reports.

    Minimum Qualifications: requirements at this level consist of a master’s degree in history, anthropology, archaeology, education, museum studies or a closely related field and three years of experience as an interpreter/educator or curator in a museum or historic site; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Salary: $30,593 to $44,870 annually with full Oklahoma public employee benefits.
