    Introduction

    Do you have a passion for public history and working with the public? Are you looking to be part of a growing local preservation program with a diverse inventory of sites that spans 300 years of history that caters to local residents, school groups and visitors from around the world? Join the Prince William County, Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Historic Preservation Division. Qualified candidates for this part time temporary position will have introductory experience with working at historic house museums or historic sites with an emphasis on US and Virginia history. Experience in conducting tours, school programs and historic research a plus, ability to work on a small but energetic and forward-looking team is a must. Historic Preservation Division manages 13 County owned historic sites and parks and averages nearly 150,000 visitors a year.
    Position Details:

    ·          This is a year-round part time TEMPORARY position, which usually works 3 days each week from May through October and may work 1 1/2 days during non-peak season.

    ·          This position will require walking and standing for extended periods of time.

    ·          Position may be indoor or outdoor and be exposed to plants, insects and severe weather (hot and cold).

    ·          Must be able to operate traditional office equipment (computer/printer/fax/telephone).

    Salary:  15.33/hr.

     The Department of Parks & Recreation conducts DMV records checks on all licensed employees and criminal background checks on all hires age 18 years and older.

    General Definition of Work, Typical tasks, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    The statements in this class specification are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by incumbent(s) assigned to this classification.     GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

     Performs regular responsible work implementing educational and interpretive programs at Prince William County owned historic sites for PWC citizens and guests. 

     

    Work is performed under regular supervision of the Historic Site Manager.

     

    TYPICAL TASKS:

     

    Develops and implements a variety of site based historic interpretative programs at Prince William County (PWC) historic sites;

    Researches and conducts guided tours of PWC historic properties;

    Collaborates with volunteer docents in order to accurately conduct guided tours;

    Implements new historic preservation educational programs;

    Ensures that there are no safety hazards present during guided tours;

    Assists in identification of potential historic interpretive and educational programs;

    Provides accurate and interesting information to visitors, citizens and guests;

    Develops new and existing interpretive programs to specific audiences;

    Designs and fabricates interpretive exhibits for display;

    Provides oversight direction and support to volunteer interpretive staff;

    Prepares volunteer interpretive program staff evaluations;

    Promote and maintain community relations and customer services;

    Answers questions of citizens, guests and visitors and provide information regarding points of interest in PWC historic sites; 

    Serves as receptionist at a specific historic interpretive site and answers questions concerning exhibitions and locations of various historical sites;

    Assists Historic Site Manager in coordinating special projects at specific historical sites;

    Recruits and trains new volunteers which includes scheduling volunteers and maintaining appropriate records.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

     

    General knowledge of American history as it pertains to PWC and Virginia; general knowledge of historic interpretive and educational programs; thorough knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic; ability to learn assigned tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed departmental routine; ability to learn assigned tasks readily and to adhere to prescribed departmental routine; ability to operate standard office equipment such as telephone, switchboard, typewriter, personal computer and copier; ability to make decisions relating to assigned tasks within established policies and procedures; ability to speak clearly; ability to communicate effectively in dealing with diverse customer needs; ability to successfully develop and implement new programs; ability to communicate effectively in writing; ability to react to citizen's questions quickly and accurately; ability to understand and follow written and oral directions; ability to accurately record and recall messages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other employees and the general public.

     

     

    Education and Experience

    Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school; and 1-2 years experience working with historic programs and PWC history preferred.
