Job Title: Farm Assistant

Compensation: $15 per hour
Time Commitment: Part time (averaging 15-20 per week)
The Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation is an 18th century living history farm featuring heritage breed animals, period-appropriate crops, and five historic buildings preserved to represent a typical mid-size colonial property. The Farm Assistant will work alongside the Farm Manager, staff, and volunteers to participate in all farming activities including animal care, site maintenance, crop and garden maintenance, as well as support historic farming programs.
Support the historic farming initiatives of the farm including working with the heritage breed animals, planting and harvesting of heritage variety crops, and upkeep of kitchen garden.
Assist with daily animal care including feeding, watering, and regular upkeep of pastures and pens. Monitor, organize, and order feed, bedding, and medical supplies.
Provide seasonal mowing and weed whacking, and will ensure that public areas and walking paths are clear and clean of debris. Maintain the appearance and safety of the site.
Responsible for the cleanliness of the bathrooms and buildings and will ensure that all necessary supplies are refilled and kept in stock.
Assist in basic site repairs to fencing, buildings, and property.
Assist in the regular maintenance of machines as needed.
This is a part time position without traditional benefits.
Must be 18 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license. Reliable transportation a must.
Previous experience and background in animal care is helpful. Must be comfortable or willing to learn basic animal care and routines such as feeding, grooming, and administering medications, and
Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance (i.e. mowers, chainsaws, splitters, etc.) strongly preferred or willingness to learn.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the position and perform farm work both indoors and out. This includes lifting a minimum of 50 pounds in weight; standing for long periods of time; walking over rough terrain; working in hot, cold, and rainy weather, and contact with livestock.
MUST be willing to work as part of a team, take direction, and be open and friendly with visitors, volunteers, and staff.
Flexible schedule, including 8 AM morning shifts, is a must and weekend work is required. Occasional evening work may be needed.
Must possess a strong attention to detail, initiative, and willingness to perform repetitive tasks.
Beneficial to have an interest or passion in history, farming, and/or historic skills. Opportunity to wear 18th century period attire.
Must submit to, and pass, a criminal background check and a Pennsylvania child abuse clearance.
