Historical Interpreter (Part-Time), Old Barracks Museum
The Old Barracks Museum, a top-rated historic site in NJ’s capital city, seeks a Historical Interpreter. We are seeking a motivated, talented, and creative individual to help produce positive visitor learning experiences for all ages, who wants to work at a unique site with a talented and passionate staff who share a love of history, preservation, and heritage tourism.
Responsibilities for Historical Interpreters:
o Conduct tours of the Old Barracks, leading visitors through the building and interpreting its history
o Employ both 1st and 3rd person style interpretation
o Take part in school and group programming
o Conduct and assist with living history demonstrations of period skills and practices
o Demonstrate the operation of 18th Century firearms and military drill
o Assist with creating social media content
o Follow safety procedures established for the site
o Engage with visitors and coworkers with hospitality, professionalism, and courtesy
o Wear, maintain, and interpret historic clothing daily
o Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements:
o Candidates must have the ability to interpret accurate historical information to the public, and be able to articulate complex ideas to individuals and groups, in both an interpretive setting and with coworkers
o Candidates must be able to perform physically strenuous tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds, sitting and standing up repeatedly, and using hand tools for extended periods of time
o Must be able to work in varied and occasionally extreme weather conditions
o Must be able and willing to wear period appropriate attire daily, in all conditions
o May be required to work with and around cooking fires
Qualifications:
o Candidates must have the ability to interpret historical information to the public, and be able to articulate complex ideas to others, including individuals and groups, in both an interpretive setting and with coworkers.
o Must be able to learn new skills and techniques, especially historic practices, trade skills, and tool usage
o Proficiency with MS Office and Google Suite
o Ability and willingness to use email
Preferred Qualifications
o Minimum two years college education with focus on history, especially 18th Century, and/or two years working as historical interpreter at a living history site.
o Knowledge of 18th century skills or trades
o Knowledge of or interest in African American history
o Knowledge of or interest in the history of NJ’s Indigenous peoples
o Hands on familiarity with reproduction 18th century firearms
This position is a part-time job, 24 hours per week. Starts at $18.50 Must be able to work Saturdays.
