Mill Interpretation and Research Specialist - Hanford Mills Museum - East Meredith, NY

    Hanford Mills Museum seeks a Mill Interpretation and Research Specialist to work with the senior staff team on a variety of projects related to the site’s historic water- and steam-powered Mill complex. This two-year, grant-funded position will include an annual salary of $30,000-$35,000 with a competitive benefits package. The position will begin in March 2020.

    Responsibilities:​ The Mill Interpretation and Research Specialist will be responsible for researching and thoroughly documenting the Mill’s collections, operations, processes and maintenance practices; benchmark best practices at other operating historic sites; actively interpret the site; and work to improve public and research access to the Mill’s collections and documentation. Projects and activities will include: 

    • Interpretation and Access:
      • Provide seasonal interpretation and assistance in Mill operations, including tours and historic machinery demonstrations, in collaboration with the Mill Operations Manager.
      • Write articles for organizational and industry publications
      • Create research reports and contribute to the Museum’s Interpretation Handbook
      • Work with Communications Coordinator to turn research into content for HMM website, newsletter, and social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
      • Submit conference presentation proposals
    • Research and Documentation:
      • Document processes relating to operation of historic machinery and power generation systems (including written notes, photographs and videos)
      • Research and benchmark best practices related to operational historic sites
      • Research history , historic context, and historic operations related to the machinery used by the Hanfords and currently in operation at the Museum
      • Work with Mill Operations Manager and Education and Research Initiatives Manager to create, test and update Mill Operation Guide

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in history or a related field
    • Strong attention to detail and effective organizational and time management skills
    • Strong written and effective verbal communication skills, including comfort speaking to and with people of all ages and backgrounds
    • Experience and/or desire to learn to operate woodworking and other historic machinery.
    • Ability to perform tasks that require moderate physical exertion, stand/walk for long periods on varying surfaces, inside and out, and in a variety of conditions
    • Support and contribute to positive staff collaboration, outstanding visitor services, safe and sustainable operations, and other duties as assigned

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Advanced degree in Museum Studies or a related field
    • Experience with collections database software
    • Knowledge of collections management and care practices
    • Experience working at a museum or historic site
