Fort Ticonderoga is seeking an Artificer Shoemaker to practice and build their mechanical skills in the trade of shoemaking. They execute with excellence all stages of building shoes; patterning, clicking, closing, bottoming, and ragging. The Artificer Shoemaker will measure feet for shoes and fit lasts accordingly. They will develop a working knowledge of sourcing leather and tool suppliers. This position will use research techniques working in archive, and archaeological collections, annotating artifacts and drafting patterns accordingly. The Artificer Shoemaker will use a broad background with leatherworking techniques to work on a diverse potential range of other necessary items. They should possess working knowledge of military and social history and related material culture of the French & Indian War and Revolutionary War periods; ability to demonstrate the shoemaking trades and translate research to living history programs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and volunteers; and have the ability to give directions/instructions. The Artificer Shoemaker must possess the ability to manage several tasks simultaneously and must exercise tact and judgment in all situations. Initiative is required and the candidate must work independently as well as be an effective team member. This position must be enthusiastic and energetic with strong background and passion for interpretation and education. High standards of authenticity and commitment to excellence are expected. Outstanding professional demeanor, energy level, and work ethic are necessary.
