    The Pioneer Museum of Alabama is seeking an enthusiastic individual to serve as the Education and Program Coordinator. This individual would have the opportunity to assist in the growth and reshaping of this fantastic institution. The Pioneer Museum of Alabama is a private non-profit living history museum composed of 22 historic structures and a spacious main gallery housing over 18,000 artifacts, all located on 40 acres of verdant grounds, gardens and wetlands. The museum prides itself on teaching future generations about the past. Its mission is to educate its patrons through the interpretation, demonstration, and exhibition of artifacts, the rural life of southern settlers and indigenous people from the late 1700’s through the early 20th century in Alabama.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    •         Develop, organize, implement, maintain, and evaluate educational programs, tours and activities that align with the mission of the Pioneer Museum of Alabama on a shoestring budget.
    •        Coordinate and deliver guided and self-guided visitor experiences for school and tour groups and general visitation.
    •      Assist with hands-on educational activities during field trips, festivals and other programs.
    •     Create and foster positive relationships with area schools, local residents, organizations and businesses.
    •    Organize and operate annual events and festivals, children and adult programming, and other functions throughout the year.
    •     Assist with planning and implementation of annual dinners and fundraising as needed.
    •   Work to develop grant concepts and secure income and funding for educational initiatives and other public programming.
    •   Research new and existing visitor experiences, audience needs and expectations for students, teachers, groups, families and visitors as well as for programs and events.  
    •   Participate in awareness, offsite and evening events as well as planning and preparation.
    •  Other duties as needed.


    •  Minimum two years museum and/or teaching experience preferred
    •  Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred
    •   Ability to be flexible, accurate and detail-oriented.
    •  Warm enthusiastic demeanor that is quality customer service driven.
    •  Desire to become a member of a close-knit staff and family-like group of volunteers.
    •  Experience in designing and implementing programs for public audiences.
    •  Experience in event planning preferred.
    •  Must have a high threshold for kid-related chaos and ability to roll with the punches.
    •  Excellent communication and writing skills, a sense of humor and experience working on a team.
    •  Demonstrated ability for critical thinking, independent judgement, and creative problem solving skills.
    •  Ability to handle multiple tasks and tight deadlines with efficiency and accuracy.
    • Knowledge and appreciation of the history Alabama and the Southeast.
    • Preferred interest in historic trades such as weaving, spinning, gardening, blacksmithing, woodworking, leather working, etc.
    • Ease with handling money, operating a point of sale system, making deposits, keeping up-to-date basic financial records.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Photoshop Elements, social media, website editing preferred along with a willingness to learn new programs.
    • Some experience with Past Perfect preferred.
    • Physical Demands: Sight to prepare written or typed program material and monitor activities. Hearing and speaking to conduct programs and exchange information. Walking over rough or uneven surfaces. Ability to lift at least 25 lbs. to shoulder height. Ability to assist individuals with mobility limitations including, but not limited, in and out of vehicles and up and down stairs. Tolerance of dust and mildew (protective gear provided). Ability to sit at a computer monitor for long periods of time.

    Salary:  $18,720.00 - $22,880.00 annually
