Fort Gibson, a National Historic Landmark, served a pivotal role in the political, social, and economic upheaval that marked the United States' westward expansion. Fort Gibson was established in 1824 to keep the peace between the Osages and Cherokees. It figured prominently in the Indian removals, was home to many of our nation's leaders during the 1840s and 1850s, and served as a starting point for several military expeditions to explore the West. It was abandoned in 1857, and reactivated during the Civil War when it was renamed Fort Blunt and served as the Union headquarters in Indian Territory. The army stayed through the Reconstruction and Indian Wars periods, combating the problem of outlaws and squatters. It was abandoned in 1890, but later served as the headquarters of the Dawes Commission for their work enrolling members of the Five Tribes. At Fort Gibson, the Commission members focused their attention on Cherokee Freedmen. Fort Gibson was home to the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry and the 10th Cavalry (Buffalo Soldiers).
Must be willing to dress in appropriate 19th-century clothing for tours and programming.
Must perform 19th-century tasks associated with a frontier military post including gardening, drill, handling of firearms for demonstrations such as caring for livestock, etc.
Assist with promoting the site through social media accounts
Develop and present educational programs
Stock gift shop and maintain inventory, collect admission fees and gift shop sales
Schedule tours and promote the site at various area events
Assist with collections cataloging and care
Assist with cleaning and maintenance of the historic site and facilities
Greet the public and handle the daily operations of the site in the absence of other staff members
Weekend work required
Necessary skills include establishing and maintaining effective working relations, communicating effectively both orally and in writing; analyzing complex historical information and presenting the key concepts to visitors in an engaging way. Must be proficient with technology including use of computers, virtual programming formats and social media. Must be able to handle retail operations including counting cash, operating a cash register, handling credit card transactions, maintaining inventory, and reconciling revenue reports.
Minimum Qualifications: Two years of public contact work or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting 30 semester hours of college course work for each year of the required experience.
Salary: $21,960 to $30,457 annually with full Oklahoma public employee benefits.
