    Job Purpose

    This position provides public engagement and builds personal connections with visitors by researching, developing, evaluating, promoting and presenting site-based heritage interpretation at Kline Creek Farm, an 1890s living history farm.

    Job Focus

    o    Interpret how 1890s farms grow crops and care for livestock

    o    Coordinate school tours

    o    Design and present living history demonstrations 

    o    Assist with interpretation of livestock care, including animal husbandry, horse-drawn field work, cow milking, and sheep shearing

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    o    Write and research programs, exhibits and other interpretive materials related to social and cultural history including family life, social and political activity, domestic activity, farming activity, and restoration by creating programs and activities for the general public, youth and school groups

    o    Collaborate with other District staff to develop and deliver meaningful, mission-based public experiences

    o    Serve as a resource for information and expertise to the general public and to outside agencies

    o    Train and oversee volunteers presenting programs and/or assisting with research and program development

    o    Collaborate with Community Relations to provide interpretive writing, speaking and promotion of the District and its initiatives and through articles, press releases, radio interviews, social media, exhibits, etc.

    o    Participate and collaborate in District-wide initiatives, including special committees and teams to enhance new and existing programs and offerings

    o    Perform other duties as required

    Education and Experience Required

    Education: BS/BA in History, Social Studies, Museum Studies, Agriculture, American Folk Life, or related field.

    Related Experience: Two (2) years experience working in an open air museum or historic; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

    Knowledge of: Historic house interpretation or living history practices and methods in order to effectively convey subject matter to the public.

    Skills In: Developing, preparing, and delivering programs designed to engage and inform the public about historic sites; operating period appropriate equipment; tending a garden; supervising the work of others; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; communicating effectively, verbally and in writing; delivering excellent public experiences.

    Supervisor: Historical Farming Program Coordinator

    Hours: Schedules vary working outside in all weather conditions. Weekends required and evenings as needed. Staff typically work of the weekend days each month.

    Uniform: Historical clothing provided by the District, staff provide historically appropriate shoes/boots. If required to wear safety shoes, an allowance is provided.
