The Horry County Museum is a general history museum that focuses on the history, prehistory and natural history of Horry County, South Carolina. The Museum cares for a collection of artifacts and archival material and uses them in exhibits that tell stories of Horry’s past. The Museum also hosts family days, tours, and special programs. The L.W. Paul Living History Farm is a living history museum that focuses on the life of farm families in Horry County in the first half of the twentieth century with specific attention given to the 1930s and 1940s. This is done through demonstrations and interpretation of agriculture, domestic skills, and trades. The Farm hosts event days, monthly demonstrations, tours, and programs. The L.W. Paul Living History Farm Interpreter ensures fulfillment of the daily agricultural interpretive programs at the Farm including children’s specialty programs, seasonal events, monthly events, and adult education programs. The Agricultural Interpreter maintains proper care of livestock, agricultural buildings, and fields at the Farm. They plan agricultural programs and are cross trained for basic program competency in domestic interpretation and other demonstrations as assigned. The Agricultural interpreter will also be trained to drive draft animals.
· Provides excellent customer service to museum visitors, whenever interacting with the public, especially children.
· Manages, demonstrates and interprets the daily agricultural activities and routines of the Farm, including barnyard chores, field work with draft animals, livestock care, use of period appropriate implements to groups and general museum visitors during the museum general season.
· Develops and conducts agricultural and livestock oriented hands-on activities and special events for museum guests during both the general season and for special programs as assigned.
· Leads education programming for adults and children, including enrichment, adult education classes, day camp, tour groups and other programs.
· Becomes certified under the Museum’s internal procedures to safely handle livestock.
· Trains to demonstrate in view of the public farm equipment including but not limited to plows, harrows, forks and rakes, scythes, flails, and various other hand and oxen/horse-powered equipment.
· Maintains and monitors strict safety guidelines for equipment, activities and programs, ensuring safe practices by all site interpreters.
· Manages use of on-site agricultural artifacts according to museum guidelines, conducts assigned site inventories, and notifies appropriate staff when repairs are needed.
· Drives horse/mule/oxen teams for horse-related special programming.
· Reads and understands historical and agricultural source material as provided. Conducts historical and agricultural research when assigned.
· Dresses in period costuming when interpreting to the public.
· Completes daily livestock care (both behind the scenes and in public view) for farm livestock, as scheduled, including completion of written daily report sheets.
· Implements livestock care procedures and policy. Monitors that all Farm staffers are following animal handling procedures and completing chore sheets daily. Turns in documentation sheets on a regular basis.
· On call for after-hours livestock emergencies as scheduled.
· Trains to safely operate modern farming and maintenance equipment, including but not limited to modern and vintage tractors, grist mill, skid steers, log splitters, garden tillers, planters, mowers, and other construction equipment.
· Completes field preparation, planting, cultivation, and harvesting of Farm crops in designated fields. Maintains designated fences and pasture areas.
· Trains volunteers in proper livestock and agricultural implement handling. Monitors and evaluates agricultural skill levels in staff and volunteers.
· Conducts routine site upkeep and maintenance of the barn, outbuildings, and farm specific field equipment and fences/animal enclosures according to museum guidelines. Alerts appropriate staff when further repairs beyond site staff skill/equipment usage abilities are needed.
· Makes agricultural supply purchases as approved within approved budget parameters.
· Collaborates with other team members to ensure Farm Domestic/Agricultural programs, including livestock care and field plantings are conducted under museum best practices, budget parameters and museum’s agriculture master plan.
College degree in history, agriculture, education, American studies or related field OR equivalent combination of education, experience and training. Previous living history museum experience required, with 2-3 years’ experience in agricultural programming, preferred. Must have an aptitude for working with livestock, including draft horses and cattle—previous experience required. Mechanical aptitudes for making adjustments and routine repairs to machinery preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required; along with strong supervisory, management and program planning skills. Experience working with volunteers, preferred. Must be able to master historical information and techniques with ability to train others. Must possess enthusiasm for working with the general public, including superior customer service skills. Must excel in working with groups of children. Ability to perform physical tasks needed to authentically re-create the activities of a 1900-1955 working farm required. Work environment requires standing for long periods of time, working in heat, cold and wet weather, and contact with livestock. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekend days.
Must be able to pass the required pre-employment physical and background check, must possess a valid driver’s license.

Requires ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and to utilize mathematical formulas with ease to determine percentages and decimals, and to determine time. Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportions.
Requires hand/eye coordination to operate automated office equipment, farm equipment, motor vehicle, etc.
Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, keyboards, office equipment, farm machinery, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
