October 11-13 2024 9:00am -4:30pm
Join us at Kilts Farm for 3 immersive days on October 11-13 2024. This three day course is designed to teach the use of traditional woodworking tools and blacksmithing tools to make a wooden bowl and a bowl adze.
Instructors: Ken Koons and Steve Mankowski
Participants spend part of each day at the forge and at the block with axe and adze.
For the bowl making part of the class, students will use wood working hand tools: hatchets, bowl adzes, gouges ,scoops and scrapers to make a wooden bowl from one piece of wood. Students have a choice of making a copy of an oval dough bowl from the Kilts Farm collection or make a design of their own choice. Proper use of hand tools, safety, and how to maintain tools will be shared.
For the bowl adze part of the workshop, students will use traditional methods in Blacksmithing to make a bowl adze. Students will have the option of slitting and drifting the eye of the adze or folding and welding to create it. Forge welding tool steel to the iron or mild steel is an option(as this is the traditional method). Some amount of experience in Blacksmithing is recommended for this part of the class. Students will also gain knowledge in the heat treatment of the steel edge of the adze.
