    Interpreter I African American History

    Historic Brattonsville

    McConnells, SC

    $30,582.28 annually

Historic Brattonsville presents the history of the Scots-Irish and African-Americans in the South Carolina upcountry largely through preserving and interpreting the story of the Bratton community. Brattonsville includes the site of a Revolutionary War battle and the Bratton Plantation, owned and lived on by three generations of the Bratton family. Featuring more than 30 historic structures from the 1760s to the late 19th century, the site provides visitors with an opportunity to see the evolution of Southern culture and architecture in the Carolina Piedmont. Historical farming techniques, heritage breed livestock, and day-to-day activities are presented by costumed interpreters year-round.

The African American History Interpreter will tell the story of the enslaved community on the Bratton plantation through delivering educational programs to school groups, daily living history activities, and occasional first-person theatrical presentations. The Interpreter will deliver both 18th- and 19th-century costumed living history programming. Essential duties include:

*Deliver educational programs to students ranging from pre-kindergarten through high school

*Deliver daily living history programing, including historical agricultural labor (field preparation, maintenance, and harvest); domestic activities (open hearth cooking, gardening); historical artisan handcrafts and trades (blacksmithing, woodworking)

*Assist in planning and developing our signature African American History events: By Way of the Back Door and By the Sweat of Our Brows
