    Responsibility: Responsible to the Farm & Horticulture Coordinator and Education Program Manager.

    Coordination: The Gardener Educator works closely with the Farm & Horticulture Coordinator to apply & coordinate agricultural practices and techniques to enhance the quality of the museum’s farm & horticulture program and guest experiences for school, group and public programs.


    The Gardener Educator:

    • Assists with all aspects of horticulture & garden maintenance, including the demonstration of historic practices and techniques for school groups, youth and the general public, facilitating hands-on educational programming at Hale Farm & Village.
    • Works directly with the public by planning and implementing interactive InHale Day to Day experiences, workshops and guided tours for guests –featuring horticulture, historic farm practices and livestock.
    • Will participate in daily garden maintenance, property wide, while educating the public about gardening history. Also engage the public to participate in gardening tasks such as cultivating, planting and harvesting. This position will be cross trained with the basic knowledge of livestock husbandry and educational points.
    • Assists with aspects of livestock husbandry and sustainability at the museum, including guest education and interaction. Livestock include: oxen, sheep, hogs and chickens.
    • Prepares and maintains tools and materials used in the assigned areas, including site set-up, clean-up and general maintenance duties as determined by the Coordinator.
    • Wear period appropriate clothing during as fits the nature of assigned duties.
    • Participates in the evaluation of programs and provides feedback in a timely and professional manner.
    • Participates in special events sponsored by or at Hale Farm & Village, including mandatory attendance for select Hale Farm community events.
    • Accepts other duties as may be assigned by the Farm & Horticulture Coordinator or Education Program Manager.


    • Have a desire to teach and work with young people, and be able to make instructions clear to guests, staff and volunteers. 
    • Have the ability to work with a wide range of museum personnel, to work independently, but willingly function as a member of a team.
    • Exhibits tact, enthusiasm, and professional behavior.
    • Ability to prioritize and have flexibility in organizing tasks, especially during periods of visitor interaction.
    • Dependable and reliable, and able to work to a time schedule.
    • This position is physical in nature and candidates must be able to stand, kneel and bend for extended periods of time, lift heavy objects and work in a variety of conditions.
    • Must either have experience with large farm animals or an appreciation of their size and care. Must have attention to detail and composure under pressure.
    • Horticulture experience preferred or a passion and willingness to learn.
