    Principal Function: The Curator of Black History and Religion will oversee Black History Experiences at Conner Prairie. The position's principal function will include overseeing the creation of a new Black Settlement experience through a religious storyline that brings to life composite stories of a 19th Century Black settlement found in the Midwest. This position will be responsible for working with the exhibits, interpretation, education departments, project advisors, and other internal teams to bring the experience to life while managing the settlement's day-to-day operations. The position will also be responsible for creating and developing new Black History experiences at Conner Prairie.

    Education and/or Experience: Masters in History or Religious studies with a focus in 19th Century African American History.  PH. D preferred; minimum of four (4) years’ experience in a related field required.

    Qualifications

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to:

    1. Manage research initiatives in support of the museum interpretation, documentation of collections, and the sharing of Black History at Conner Prairie. 
    2. Oversee the design, development and implementation of new strategies to include interpretation, programming and exhibit elements for the new Black Settlement Experience.  This will include online platform and marketing development.
    3. Oversee the administration of the project with respect to budgeting, community engagement, marketing, staffing, reporting and tracking.
    4. Oversee and manages religious fellows on the project.
    5. Lead the day-to-day operations of the experience.
    6. Collaborate closely with exhibits team in the development of the experience.
    7. Work closely with project advisors on the development and delivery of the project.
    8. Partner with marketing to develop strategies to reach communities of color.
    9. Foster relationships with local and national religious organizations and churches.
    10. Coordinate the publication of papers and other research efforts.
    11. Present virtual and in-person lectures and workshops.
    12. Recommend acquisitions and deaccessions to the Director of Exhibits and Collections Coordinator.
    13. Assist the organization with other Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Inclusion initiatives.

    • The knowledge of collections appropriate for our organization’s time periods is required.
    • The knowledge relating to the logistics and handling or collection of items is required.
    • The ability to prepare and maintain financial budgets is required.
    • The ability to operate a computer, printer, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, and other office equipment is required.
    • The ability to speak, read and write in English is required. Spanish is desired.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally is exposed to working near moving mechanical parts and the risk of electrical shock when working with office equipment and outdoor weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

    While the offices of Conner Prairie are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, this position may require work beyond these hours and on the weekends. It also may require occasional domestic travel.  A valid driver’s license is desired.
