Historic St. Mary’s City, an accredited living history museum commemorating Maryland’s first capital (1634-1695), seeks a qualified individual to fill the position of Waterfront Site Supervisor by February 28, 2019. This position is responsible for interpreting the Maryland Dove and the maritime history of Maryland in the 17th century for the general public and school tours. As a supervisor this position ensures that seasonal and volunteer staff are properly trained to interpret and demonstrate period-correct activities on ship and shore.
Enthusiasm, experience in staff supervision, effective communication and organizational skills, the ability to work with a variety of people and in a team setting, and the ability to conduct historical research required. A minimum of three years experience working as a living history interpreter is required. In-depth knowledge of maritime history is a must.
Salaried position ($30,000 - $35,000 yearly) with excellent benefits package.

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Interpretive Programs Manager, the Waterfront Interpretive Site Supervisor interprets and educates the public and other professionals on 17th-century Maryland maritime history, colonial/Indian trade, and water resources. Primary functions include re-creating 17th-century maritime activities on the Maryland Dove in an accurate, dynamic, creative, and scholarly manner. The Waterfront Interpretive Site Supervisor is responsible for developing, researching, and implementing interpretive programs for the site, supervision of permanent, contractual, and volunteer staff, and assisting the Maritime Curator and his staff with the general maintenance of the facility.
Through third-person techniques, interpret in period costume 17th-century maritime life for the public and other professionals via tours, outreach programs, lectures, living history presentations, and special events. Occasional first-person interpretation may be required, for specific programs.
Working as part of team to ensure that school tours are done in a fun, educational and safe manner at the Waterfront
Research, organize, and conduct demonstrations of site-appropriate 17th-century maritime skills including woodworking, sail mending, and rope work, for use in daily interpretive programming, special events, and education programs.
Train interpretive staff, education staff, and volunteers in operational procedures, interpretive duties, accurate costuming, and basic historical information relating to the site, or as assigned.
Participate in developing training and site operational manual for staff and volunteers. Conduct annual review and update of manual.
Assist in researching, developing, implementing, and evaluating interpretive programs and exhibits for the Waterfront.
Recommend Waterfront budget for interpretive supplies, materials, furnishings, and reproduction items.
Conduct facility and site inspections.
Attend staff and planning meetings.
Maintain administrative duties, including developing staff performance plans and appraisals, and submitting all necessary paperwork in a timely manner.
Manage Waterfront interpretive staff and make recommendations on training needs. Keep staff informed of all current museum-related events, projects, policies, procedures, and research materials.
Maintain organized, site-appropriate reading and research files approved by the Research Department for use by interpretive staff. Provide historical expertise relating to site and all related activities, training programs, and evaluations.
Coordinate with the Head of Maritime Programs/Ship’s Master and the Ship’s Carpenter to develop and implement an interpretive maintenance program for the necessary upkeep of the maritime and waterfront exhibits in accordance with established priorities, museum policies, historical standards, available funding, and predetermined timetables.
Occasionally assist the Head of Maritime Programs/Ship’s Master with supervision of volunteers conducting maintenance or interpretive maintenance.
Participate in media activities such as film shoots, radio spots, and interviews with journalists.
Represent museum at assigned workshops, professional organizations, and committees.
Work with the Volunteer Coordinator and Head of Maritime Programs/Ship's Master to effectively train and integrate volunteers into waterfront interpretation and watercraft maintenance.
Take part in sail training program and educational/good-will sail trips on a regular basis.
Responsible for staff and public safety.
Direct emergency response action according to museum policy.
Assist with and participate in the development of outreach programs and other programs as assigned. Outreach programs require travel and occasional overnights.

The incumbent should possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Managerial, supervisory, organizational, and administrative skills.
Knowledge of 17th-century maritime history.
Knowledge of 17th -century Maryland history.
Ability to portray 17th-century characters in first and third-person.
Ability to conduct scholarly and historical research, design interpretive or educational programs, prepare and present oral and written reports, lectures and narratives, and disseminate knowledge of history to the public.
Ability to work as part of team.
Knowledge of and ability to use: woodworking tools, both 17th -century and modern (power and hand), skills in canvas work, splicing, knotting and other rope work, painting, varnishing, black powder gunnery, and open-hearth cooking.
Knowledge of safety procedures when using black powder weapons.
Ability to perform interpretive duties in 17th-century costume in a wide variety of weather conditions, lift up to 50 pounds, climb heights up to and possibly exceeding 70 feet, perform craft demonstrations and minor repair work, and walk, bend, and/or stand for extensive periods of time.
Certified in Community CPR and Basic First Aid.
Knowledge of sailing vessels (preferably 17th-century ships) and ability to sail and swim.
Ability to travel and work a flexible schedule including holidays and weekends.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Education and Experience:
· College degree in history, museum history, or related field preferred.
· Minimum three years as costumed interpreter in a living history museum.
· Knowledge of maritime history and skills required, 17th -century maritime history preferred.
· Demonstrated supervisory and managerial abilities.
