Winter/Spring News-brief         Feb. 22, 2010

Although we will not be holding another regional conference until 2011, opportunities for networking and professional development abound in the Mid Atlantic Region, as always.  Each of the symposiums, workshops and conferences listed below is associated with one of our region’s institutions, business associates or members. No doubt there are many others.  If you are running one, or know of one, please send the information to pwatson@howellfarm.com so it can be added to the list.  The updated list will be maintained on the Mid-Atlantic page of the ALHFAM website, and published quarterly in The Cloverleaf.

  • Genteel Arts is holding its Sixteenth Annual Ladies & Gentlemen of the 1860s Conference in Camp Hill, Pa., March 4 – 7.   For information, visit: www.genteelarts.com.

  • The New Jersey Living History Advisory Council (NJLHAC) is offering a free, one day seminar on how to improve the safety, authenticity, and public awareness of living history programs and events.  "Presenting the Past" will be held on Saturday, April 17 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Historic Walnford in Upper Freehold Township, NJ.  Information about the program  and registration is available at http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/historic/njlhac/index.html

  • Rocky Gap State Park in partnership with the National Association for Interpretation is offering its Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) Training Workshop April 26-29 at Rocky Gap State Park, Flintstone, MD.  More information is available @ www.interpnet.com/certification/workshops/CIG_FlintstoneMD_Apr10.shtml.
  • Somerset Historical Center, located in Somerset, Pa. is holding two workshops in April, one on making reed woven stools and one on basket making.   For information, visit their website at:  http://www.somersethistoricalcenter.org/Calendar_of_events.html

  • Mabee Farm Historic Site in Rotterdam Junction, NY is planning workshops in tinsmithing, colonial beer making, beginning spinning and dyeing, dutch oven cooking and basket making.  Dates will soon be posted on their website: www.mabeefarm.org.  

The Mid-Atlantic Region will hold its annual business meeting on June 23, during the 2010 ALHFAM Conference at Old Sturbridge Village.  The region has s sponsored two, $600 fellowships for the conference.  For details and application form, see The ALHFAM Bulletin, Winter Edition, 2010 or go to the Conference Fellowship page.

Our next Regional Conference will be held in late winter/early spring of 2011, at Genesee Country Village and Museum in Mumford, NY.   The dates are TBA.  For a look at GCV, go to http://www.gcv.org/
